VALIANT and KAMITE Partner For Spanish Language Publishing in Mexico

PrintValiant is proud to announce a new foreign publishing partnership with Kamite, one of Mexico’s leading publishers of comics and graphic novels, for a new line of Spanish language comic books, translating Valiant’s leading line of monthly super-hero titles.

The partnership will launch with the debut of newly translated editions of X-O Manowar, Bloodshot, and Shadowman this coming winter. More Valiant titles – including Harbinger, Archer & Armstrong, Quantum and Woody, Eternal Warrior, and Unity – will follow in 2014.

All of Valiant’s Spanish language Kamite titles will be available through Kamite’s two Mexico City comic book speciality stores, as well as via Grupo Sanborns, a major Mexican retail chain with more than 165 locations nationwide. Kamite will also host an array of Valiant-branded merchandise, produced by Cinderblock, through their online retail site.

“Valiant has quickly reestablished itself as one of the most exciting and vital publishers in the comics business today,” said Kamite CEO Miguel Ángel Lara del Valle. “We’re just over a year into the new Valiant Universe, and the timing couldn’t be better to introduce X-O Manowar, Bloodshot, Shadowman, and the like to our ever-expanding and eager readership in Mexico.”

“With successful foreign language publishing efforts already underway in Brazil, Spain, France, and Italy, Mexico is a perfect next step to bring the Valiant Universe to a whole new audience,” said Russell A. Brown, Valiant’s President of Consumer Products, Promotions, and Ad Sales. “These are characters that resonate globally, and Kamite’s dedicated team and incredible supply chain across Mexico make them an ideal partner for Spanish language publishing.”

As the Mexican publisher of titles including The Walking Dead, 300, Simpsons Comics, Spawn, and more, Kamite consists of professionals with extensive experience in publishing and media throughout the realm of comics, manga and trade paperbacks. Nationally, they are among Mexico’s most important publishing houses in the sector of science fiction, entertainment, and pop culture.

Valiant is a leading character-based entertainment company with a library of over 1,500 characters. Since its summer 2012 relaunch, Valiant has returned to the fore as one of the most highly regarded publishers in comics, winning a 2012 Diamond Gem Award for Comic Book Publisher of the Year. Valiant’s current titles include X-O Manowar, Harbinger, Bloodshot, Archer & Armstrong, Shadowman, Quantum and Woody, and Eternal Warrior with an eighth series – Unity – scheduled to debut this November.

MUST READ VALIANT! PETER MILLIGAN and ROBERTO DE LA TORRE Demystify SHADOWMAN #13!

MUST READ VALIANT_SHADOWMAN

This December, comics icon Peter Milligan (Hellblazer, X-Statix) and visionary artist Roberto De La Torre (Daredevil, Age of Apocalypse) are honing Shadowman to a razor-sharp point aimed straight at the jugular of the Valiant Universe!

SM_013_001As revealed today in USA Today, Milligan and De La Torre will begin their run as Valiant’s newest ongoing creative team in Shadowman #13 – the FIRST ISSUE of all-new story arc exposing the malignant roots of Shadowman’s superhuman abilities…roots that began in Jack Boniface’s own tortured past…and now extend through the bloodied back-alleys of 21st century New Orleans.

When a troubled young man with a history of violence and a penchant for blackouts meets an overwhelming source of power with a mystical scythe, the results are doomed to be destructive. A voodoo loa has possessed Jack Boniface – or so he believes. But after Jack awakens in an alleyway covered in blood, he embarks on a journey across lands of shadows and death to discover if he can expel the dark force that’s seized control of his life…and which may be responsible for a violent rampage through the city he swore to protect.

“My first arc will be an attempt to dig up some dirt, dislodge a few skeletons, and find out what the Hell is really going on with Jack. I’m not throwing everything out with the bath water, I’m just making the bath water a bit more grimy and, hopefully, unpleasant,” Milligan told USA Today. “Something is wrong with Jack and to find out what it is he’ll need to face some terrible truths about himself and make some big changes in his life.”

SM_013_002Featuring a standard cover by De La Torre, alongside Pullbox and incentive variants by Miguel Sepulveda (Red Lanterns), Ben Templesmith (Ten Grand), and Shane Davis (Superman: Earth One), Shadowman #13 is also the first title in the MUST READ VALIANT initiative – a new series of self-contained stories and easy jumping-on points across the Valiant publishing line from some of the brightest talents in comics today.

“As a publishing company, our number one priority is always accessibility. With that in mind, we’ve built MUST READ VALIANT to showcase a handful of new, exciting entry points across all of Valiant’s monthly series,” said Valiant Publisher Fred Pierce. “Valiant is among the most talked-about publishers in comics today, and we are constantly being approached by new readers looking for clean introductions to our characters and our universe. Start reading in UNITY #1 this November – then explore the rest of what we have to offer when MUST READ VALIANT kicks off with Shadowman #13.”

You’ve heard the buzz. You’ve seen the reviews. Now, find out why VALIANT has been heralded as the MUST READ publisher in comics today when Peter Milligan and Roberto De La Torre drag Jack Boniface to his blackest depths yet in Shadowman #13 – in stores December 4th!

And get a sneak peek at things to come in Shadowman #13X – a special standalone prelude to Shadowman’s all-new story arc from Peter Milligan and newcomer Diego Bernard (Witchblade) – bagged exclusively with Bleeding Cool Magazine #7 and available in comic stores everywhere on October 23rd!

Celebrated Cartoonist ANDY FRIEDMAN Covers HARBINGER #19

HAR_019_VARIANT_FRIEDMANValiant is proud to announce that celebrated cartoonist and musician Andy Friedman has contributed a stunning variant cover for December’s Harbinger #19 – the final installment of the acclaimed “Perfect Day” story arc from New York Times best-selling writer Joshua Dysart and legendary artist Barry Kitson!

As a noted contributor to The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic and many more, Friedman’s gag cartoons and portraits of cultural icons have appeared in hundreds of newspapers and magazines across the world. Friedman is also a prolific singer-songwriter with three acclaimed albums to his credit – 2007′s Taken Man, 2009′s Weary Things and 2011′s Laserbeams and Dreams – and for over a decade has enjoyed performing in the nation’s premier music venues.

Harbinger #19 will mark his first foray into monthly comics.

“The opportunity to present the human side of Peter Stanchek was interesting to me. The [Harbinger Renegades] are a group of outcasts, which makes them instantly relatable, because I would venture to guess that feeling like an outcast is something that we all feel at times, some perhaps more than others,” said Friedman. “When we come to terms with the positive aspects of what might set us apart from the rest of the people, we begin to celebrate our unique existence in the world, and only then do we tend to discover and put to good use our true powers and purpose. Harbinger reinforces this truth and it’s a healthy metaphor, the way I see it.”

“Andy is a singular artistic talent. He’s delivered an incredible new vision of the world that Joshua Dysart and Barry Kitson have been building with this series. His inimitable depiction of Peter Stanchek – who he’s captured here not as a superhero, or a Renegade, or an omega-level Harbinger, but as an everyday teenager – is the perfect way to cap off the end of our tensest, most mind-bending story arc yet,” added Valiant Executive Editor Warren Simons.

Join the series that Comic Book Resources calls “one of the best superhero comics currently available” here as Peter Stanchek prepares for the mental battle of his life, with the fate and freedom of his fellow Renegades hanging in the balance. It all happens when “Perfect Day” reaches its unforgettable conclusion in Harbinger #19 – in stores December 11th! And look for the Harbinger #19 Order All Friedman Variant on shelves at your local comics retailer.

More with ANDY FRIEDMAN on HARBINGER #19 and Beyond:

This is the first time you’ve ever worked in the monthly comic book format. What brought you to comics at this stage in your career?

AF: Comics brought me to comics – I’ve been interested in them as a visual medium for as long as I could remember. I was never quite the collector or scholar with them the way I was with, say, baseball cards, but it was the graphic design over the content of both of these forums that initially reeled me in. Same with music. I had visual relationships with album covers long before I heard any of the music that they contained. With comic books, I would absorb the relationship between ink and color in each frame and that, for the most part, was the story, as far as I was concerned. I clamored for the comic books that were drawn well — that was the prerequisite. It was less about the characters for me. I still always have a stack of comic books in my studio that I pore through for visual inspiration, and I take them as seriously as plates of paintings by Diego Velazquez.

Out of all of Valiant’s titles, what was it about Harbinger that appealed to you in particular?

AF: The opportunity to present the human side of Peter Stanchek was interesting to me. The [Harbinger Renegades] are a group of outcasts, which makes them instantly relatable, because I would venture to guess that feeling like an outcast is something that we all feel at times, some perhaps more than others. When we come to terms with the positive aspects of what might set us apart from the rest of the people we begin to celebrate our unique existence in the world, and only then do we tend to discover and put to good use our true powers and purpose. Harbinger reinforces this truth and its a healthy metaphor, the way I see it.

Your work as a cartoonist has appeared primarily in magazines. How is working for the monthly comics medium different? Was it a challenge?

AF: It makes no difference to me whether I’m presenting a piece of art to a magazine, a comic book, a book, or any other medium. My job and my passion is to get to the inner truth of the subject and tell the story in the way I’ve got to tell it, and that’s what I do. It’s always a challenge to be truthful, confident, and economical with the language that one uses in the telling of a story, at least in my experience, but its no more of a challenge than getting up in the morning and having a great day. Its all about relying on what it is you’ve got to say with the means available to express it, however limited or expansive those means may be. It’s the code of blues, poetry, and meditation. To me, part of being an artist is about finding that place where you can do no wrong. I aspire to do what I’m naturally inclined to do, and therein lies the challenge with every aspect of my work, regardless of the medium or forum in which its presented.

The legendary future of the Valiant Universe – back in print after 20 years!

4001 A.D. – Tohru Nakadai is the 42nd Rai, the spirit guardian of Japan. Infused with the energy of his ancestors and dedicated to the way of the samurai, Rai is sworn to the service of Grandmother – the personified artificial intelligence that governs the island nation of Japan. For forty generations Grandmother’s benevolent dominion has endured, but in the wake of her sudden disappearance, Rai will become all that stands between his nation and all-out chaos. As humanist factions war with mechanist loyalists for control of the future, the masterless Tohru is about to become the first Rai that must choose for himself how best to defend his people, his family, and his honor.

Collecting RAI (1992) #1-8 in a deluxe hardcover format for the first time anywhere, revisit the future of the original Valiant Universe with Rai’s critically acclaimed, highly sought-after adventures from legendary creators David Michelinie (Amazing Spider-Man, Iron Man), Joe St. Pierre (Spider-Man 2099), Peter Grau (Titans) and Sal Velluto (Bloodshot)!
